The Results
In our first year we ordered 15 containers of fresh Chinese carrots. We believe that we were the first importers of fresh Chinese carrots into Europe. On the first shipping consignment the containers were held at the port for several days by DEFRA and customs for a thorough examination. This came as no surprise and, for us, it also came as no surprise that the goods were passed with a clean bill of health. We also sent samples off full pesticide residue testing which came back clean. Our customers were generally surprised and delighted by the quality of the carrots. Last season we imported 51 containers of Chinese carrots. We have developed our own brand, Red Star, which is without doubt the premier brand for Chinese carrots in the European market place. In summary, we have broken new ground for the European fresh produce market, developed a premium brand and built up a healthy business for Chinese carrots throughout Europe
