Nationwide supports FareShare

Nationwide Produce has begun its journey in supporting FareShare, the UK’s largest food redistribution charity, tackling food waste and hunger.

Nationwide has taken the decision to support FareShare through the provision of surplus fresh vegetables and fruits, both supporting those in need in the UK and the company’s aims to reduce edible food ‘waste’.

January started with a bang for the two FareShare warehouses that have so far received Nationwide’s support. The nearby FareShare West Midlands team was very pleased to collect a colourful array of tasty vegetables from the Nationwide team, noting the nutritional importance of the food for the charities they support in the region. The lesser-seen and more unique produce, including the sweet golden beetroots and the bright green, beautiful Romanesco cauliflowers given by Nationwide Produce, has stirred excitement amongst the cooks at the charities supported by FareShare who will use it to create nutritious meals for those they support.

FareShare is the UK’s largest food redistribution charity, with 25 warehouses across the country. By ensuring good food is not wasted FareShare turns an environmental problem into a social solution. It takes surplus food from the food industry, which is then redistributed through a network of 11,000 frontline organisations, across the UK such as homeless hostels, school breakfast clubs, domestic violence refuges, older people’s lunch clubs, food banks and hospices. FareShare provides enough food to create almost a million meals for vulnerable people every week. Last year;

  • FareShare saved 20,838 tonnes of food from waste
  • FareShare provided enough food for 46.5 million meals (that’s 893,737 meals for vulnerable people every week)
  • FareShare supported 10,942 charities and community groups right across the UK
