Nationwide Produce donates 500,000 meals to people in need

by | Oct 31, 2022 | News

Nationwide Produce has donated 217 tonnes of food which is the equivalent of 500,000 meals to Fareshare to help those in need.

“We are proud to have hit such a monumental milestone of donating 500,000 meals to 3825 charities across the UK via Fareshare.” Says Scott Hollins, Managing Director at Nationwide Produce Evesham.

Scott goes on to say “We have always been happy to help and support them, especially since the cost-of-living crisis. We are focused on continuing to make a positive impact and we are excited to continue our ever-evolving partnership with Fareshare.”

Since we started working with Fareshare on the Covid Crisis project back in January 2020, where we distributed 18 million meals as part of a £16m DEFRA-funded project, we have mapped out a strategy to minimise food waste.

Fareshare redistributes good food, which would otherwise go to waste, to frontline charities and community groups that support people in need. These groups then turn the surplus food into nutritional meals or food parcels for those who need it most. We are pleased to say we have helped 3825 charities across the UK with our regular donations of fresh fruit and vegetables.

After working together for almost 3 years, we have donated 217 tonnes of surplus food. This has been calculated by Fareshare as 420g of surplus food = 1 meal.

Scott Hollins, MD of Nationwide Evesham, said “Our partnership has a positive impact on people across the UK. We would certainly encourage anyone thinking of partnering with Fareshare to do so.”

Donating surplus food has never been easier, we get in touch with our dedicated Supply Chain and Logistics officer, they sort all of the logistics and supply us with a pallet label. This process ensures that good food doesn’t go to waste.

“The fresh produce Nationwide donates to us is a valuable lifeline for many people in the UK who are struggling. It is great to see companies helping us achieve our mission of no good food going to waste, especially whilst so many people in the UK are struggling to afford good quality nutrition. Massive thank you to Nationwide for their ongoing support!” Ben Read, Commercial Officer at Fareshare UK

The long-standing issue of food poverty and deprivation has only been highlighted further by the Covid-19 pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis. By providing nutritious surplus food to Fareshare, enables deprived communities to access quality, healthy food they otherwise would not be able to afford.
